Almighty Ministries, Inc. was first organized in 1991 as an outreach effort to youths within an apartment complex in Southwest Houston. The goal was to provide structured, supervised activity on the weekends to youths who could benefit from recreation as an alternative to at-risk behavior. The Almighty Drill Team was formed and as many as 40 youths eagerly participated as they marched and drilled on the tennis courts. Other activities include birthday celebrations, field trips and arts and crafts.
The name was changed to the Achieving Youth of Today drill team following a partnership with Ujima, Inc. in 1996. During this seven year partnership, numerous youths from the Aristocrat, Cambridge Village and Chateau Village apartments benefited from the structure, discipline and recreation that the drill team provided.
On June 13, 2000 Almighty Ministries, Inc. became a corporation. A year later, Almighty Ministries, Inc. became exempt from Federal income tax under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. On May 10, 2006, Almighty Ministries, Inc. was recognized by the IRS as a public charity.
The drill team grew to become a daily after-school program in 2005 at the Hobby Place apartments. Youths were provided with snacks, tutoring, homework assistance and practiced 2-3 times a week in the drill team. While at this location, a summer program was formed for the first time.
Currently, Almighty Ministries, Inc. is broad-based. Programs that were formerly housed in one facility are now being offered to youths in adjacent communities. The structure of Almighty Ministries, Inc. may have changed but the evangelistic mission remains the same for our youth “of equipping them with skills necessary to become responsible and productive individuals.” The best is yet to come!
